The award winning Saftey Base breakaway pole-to-base coupling device was invented at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manitoba. Since its invention, over 90% of the City of Winnipeg's traffic signal poles and over 4,000 street lighting poles have been equipped with Safety Bases.

As well, the Safety Base poles can now be found in large urban centres across North America.

When a vehicle collides with a pole, the Safety Base couplers allow the pole to break away from its base. After a collision, the couplers are easily removed and replaced with a new coupler set. The undamaged pole is then lifted into position and a shroud is placed around the Safety Base system. The entire procedure is fast, simple and cost effective.

Benefits of Safety Base:
  • NCHRP report 230 & 350
  • Meets or exceeds the criteria set by AASHTO requirements.
  • FHWA approved.
  • Protects anchor bolts.
